Dominic-Searching

Upon returning from their hike, the late afternoon sun started sinking behind the treeline, but instead of Dom listening to birds chirping and campers enjoying nature, the crackling of law enforcement radios hung in the air. He cringed as Savage's pickup and three state patrol cars filled the spaces near his RV. The other campers walked by, keeping their distance, but still intent on staring at the spectacle.

Dom was determined to keep away from the shakedown, but this was Ranger Savage’s party, and he waved the warrant toward the forensics team.

“I want every inch of that RV searched inside and out. Finish it by the time that Jeep returns."

Savage handed over the warrant to Dominic. “Get ready for a beating of your own.”

Spencer motioned Dominic to the picnic table and tossed his hat on the top. “Keep cool.”

Dom shrugged. “They’ll leave once they find the box.”

“And the notebook.”

Dominic liked their plan to hide fake evidence in the motorhome. The random Iraqi documents would keep interpreters busy for weeks. Now, other worries filled his mind.

“What about those crazy women, man? Who knows what they’re doing?” Dominic grabbed a stack of newspaper and wadded several sheets into balls. “Can we even trust them?”

"You had to pick 'em up," Spen muttered under his breath.

"Yeah. It's that damn M.D. oath." He worked on his campfire while ignoring the RV search. He built a teepee out of kindling around the newspaper and set it ablaze with one flick of the lighter.

"Hippocratic BS more like." Spencer kicked the leg on the picnic table. “Anyway. Should have put that shit in storage.”

“We can't let it out of our sight. Everything’s cool. Nothing illegal is going on with that.”

“Dom. Interpretation is always the question, and there's a fine line between legal and illegal in this case.”

“That’s been the argument. Let it go.”

An hour later, Savage stepped out of the RV. He marched over to the picnic table, swinging a torn cardboard box onto the tabletop. “Bingo. Hidden in the rear closet, behind a secret panel.” The ranger held a small notebook high in the air. “And what do we have here? They found it stashed inside the bathroom sink cabinet, behind the pipes.”

Spencer lifted his hat from the table. “You done? I’d like to tie up my horse and get some grub.”

Dom placed three logs on the fire, careful not to collapse the kindling. “You really want that reward, don’t you?”

“I want to find your AWOL soldiers.”

“MIA soldiers. Not AWOL.”

“Apples, oranges. Doesn’t matter at this point. Now, I’m gonna sit and wait for that Jeep to come back to camp.” Savage plopped the evidence box into the backseat of his pickup and marched to the door of the RV. “Yes, sir. I can feel that reward money heading into my bank account.”

Dom stepped inside, hoping not to show how much the stress of them inspecting the Jeep had crept inside him. "Unless you're going to Iraq, you shouldn't hold your breath." He climbed the stairway, brushing past Spencer.
